In December 2024, Tamiya launched the Hornet EVO radio-controlled (R/C) 1/10th scale off-road buggy (Tamiya) as an updated vehicle 40 years after its first release.
Several updates and other additions were made to the car:
- Motor and drivetrain upgrades
- The car is standard equipped with a Hobbywing THW-1060-RTR electronic speed controller (manual).
- All Tamiya-style battery connectors were also replaced with IC3 ones (capable of handling 60 A continous current). They have been treated with silicone for smoother (dis)connecting.
- The default 540 motor (27T, brushed, 14000 RPM) can now be swapped for:
- CR-Tuned motor (35T, brushed, 12000 RPM) (manual)
- Lightly-Tuned motor (28T, brushed, 16300 RPM) (manual)
- Super Stock RZ motor (23T, brushed, 27500 RPM) (manual)
- Mabuchi Sport Tuned RS-540 motor (silver can, 23T, brushed, 18300 RPM)
- Carson Launcher 2.0 (12T, brushed, 32500 RPM)
- Steering upgrades
- Controlling the vehicle was done using a FlySky FS-i6X 10-channel 2.4 GHz AFHDS2A transmitter (manual, quick start) with a FlySky FS-iA6B 2.4 GHz 6-channel receiver (6-channel manual). This was in turn upgraded a FlySky FS-G11P transmitter (manual) and 11-channel FS-R11P receiver (manual).
- In order to monitor the state of the LiPo battery, the car was equipped with a FlySky FS-CVT01 voltage sensor that sends telemetry back to the transmitter for real-time monitoring; this sensor was afterwards removed as the FS-R11P receiver already provides this functionality.
- The steering servo is a Savöx SC-1251MG+ low-profile servo with a digital coreless motor and metal gears, combined with a hi-torque servo saver.
- In addition, a SkyRC GC-401 gyroscope (manual) is mounted for additional steering assistance.
- A SkyRC GSM-015 GNSS speed and GPS positioning sensor can be installed to allow full trajectory sampling up to 10 Hz.
- Chassis upgrades
- The rear suspension contains the heaviest medium silicone damper oil 700 (purple).
- The rear springs were changed to harder (blue) ones from the DT-02 series.
- The cockpit has been equipped with white LED lights, switchable using an Absima receiver channel on/off switch.
- The bottom rear of the car has been enforced with a lightweight aluminium strip.
- The car can now also be fitted with rubber road tyres (front and rear, wheels (front and rear), nuts, screws, and bearings), in addition to the default spike tyres.
